Recent genetics research on leadership by Dr. Richard Avey suggests about 30% of leadership is born (genetic), 30% is made in the formative years (young in life), and about 30% of leadership is “made” throughout one’s life. A quote by Warren Bennis informs this discussion when he said “more leaders have been made by accident, circumstance, sheer grit, or will than have been made by all the leadership courses put together.” Do you agree or disagree with this statement, and why? If you agree, how would you design a leadership course differently?

I believe that the grind and the pure will to want to be a leader is the most important trait a leader can have. This is what will put the person in situations where they can learn in real life experiences. These real-life experiences teach people how to be leaders much more effectively like that of an athlete learning their game by playing it rather than just studying schemes or tactics. I believe that a leadership course that would be truly effective would be extremely difficult to craft unless there was some sort of internship or shadowing opportunities.
